Program Overview

 

The Accelerated Doula Certification Program (ADCP) is designed for practicing birth doulas who hold existing certification from a recognized organization such as DONA International, CAPPA, or another recognized and approved organization outside of Canada. This program affirms your experience and deepens professional development through structured reflection and practical documentation.

Eligibility Requirements

​

Applicants must:

 

  • Hold a current or expired certification from a recognized doula training organization (e.g., DONA, CAPPA)

  • Have attended at least 10 births in a professional doula capacity

  • Be in good standing within the birth support community (no known ethical violations)

 

Certification Components

 

1. Proof of Existing Certification

  • Submit a copy of your current or most recent certification

  • Include contact information for a professional reference (e.g., midwife, OB, or fellow doula) 

 

2. Professional Reflection (Written or Video Submission)

 

Choose one of the following:

 

Option A: Written Portfolio

 

  • 3 Reflective Essays (500–800 words each)

    • Essay 1: Lessons Learned from Supporting Diverse Birthing Families

    • Essay 2: Navigating Challenges in Birth Work

    • Essay 3: The Doula’s Role in Informed Consent and Advocacy

 

Option B: Video Documentation

 

  • Submit 3 video reflections (5–7 minutes each)

    • Same topics as above

    • Must include your face and voice; professional tone expected

3. Birth Log Submission

  • Document your attendance at 10 births within the last 5 years

    • Include: date, location, role, client initials (for confidentiality), birth setting (hospital, home, birthing center), and attending provider (midwife/OB)

     

4. Client or Provider Testimonial (Minimum of 2)

  • Must include at least:

    • 1 testimonial from a client

    • 1 testimonial from a midwife, OB, or nurse

Testimonials should describe your professionalism, communication, and impact on the birth experience.

 

Submission Format

 

All materials can be submitted digitally:

  • Written essays: PDF format

  • Videos: MP4 format or unlisted YouTube/Vimeo link

  • Birth log and testimonials: PDF or DOC format

 

Certification Review Process

  • All materials are reviewed by a peer panel of certified doulas and birth professionals.

  • Allow 4–6 weeks for review and notification.

  • Feedback will be provided whether certification is granted or further materials are requested.

 

Upon Certification

  • You’ll receive a digital certificate valid for 5 years

  • Optional listing in our Certified Doula Directory for insurance purposes

  • Access to continuing education discounts

Renewal Requirements (Every 5 Years)

  • 1st Renewal After 5 Years, $75

  • 2nd Renewal After 10 Years, $50

  • 3rd Renewal After 15 Years $25

  • Renewal Fees Waived After 20 Years of Service

To renew certification:

  • Submit documentation of 5 additional births

  • Attend 1 continuing education workshop

  • Write or record a 500-word/video reflection on how your doula practice has evolved
