Program Purpose

 

The Canadian Birth Doula Certification Program (CBDCP) is rooted in culturally aware, evidence-informed, and person-centred birth support. This program ensures doulas across Canada are prepared to serve diverse families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, while respecting Canadian health systems and laws.

 

Eligibility & Prerequisites

​

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Must reside in Canada or plan to practice in a Canadian setting

  • Completion of an Approved Doula Workshop (online or in person)

  • Must complete all requirements within 3 years of workshop completion

 

Required Canadian Readings & Resources

 

You are expected to read and reflect on the following texts:

 

  1. “The Canadian Childbirth Handbook” – Patricia A. Janssen & Eileen K. Hutton

  2. “Birth Without Fear” – January Harshe (Canadian edition where available)

  3. “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding” – La Leche League Canada

  4. “With Woman: A Midwife’s Story” – Barbara Katz Rothman (Canadian publisher edition)

  5. Evidence-Based Birth Canada – https://evidencebasedbirth.ca (select 3 topics to review)

  6. "The Birth Partner"- Penny Simkin (American)

 

Reflection questions based on these readings will be included in your certification packet.

 

Written Work Requirements

​

1. Reading Reflections (Choose 3 Readings)

  • Submit a 200-word reflection for each reading

  • Discuss insights gained, and how the material relates to Canadian birthing families

 

2. Philosophy of Practice Essay

  • 750–1,000 words

  • Address your personal values, role of advocacy, informed consent, and how you support families in the Canadian healthcare system

​

Experiential Component

You must attend three births meeting the following criteria:

​

 Birth Attendance Requirements

  • At least 2 vaginal births

  • Maximum 1 caesarean birth

  • Must total 20+ cumulative hours of direct parental support (labour, birth, and early postpartum)

  • Births must occur within 3 years of your doula workshop

​

 Required Documentation per Birth:

  • Birth Log Form (provided): include date, location, setting, care providers, and your role

  • Parental Support Hour Breakdown

  • Client Feedback Form

  • Optional: Provider Feedback Form (midwife, nurse, OB)

​

Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding Support Training

​

Choose one of the following:

 

  • Complete a recognized breastfeeding/chestfeeding support course (La Leche League, CAPPA, INFACT Canada, or approved equivalent)

  • OR attend a local breastfeeding clinic for observation (minimum 4 hours)

  • Submit a 1-page reflection on key observations and how you’ll support families in infant feeding

Workshop Participation

​

Attend a TDG foundational doula training workshop that includes:

 

  • Labour & birth physiology

  • Emotional & physical support techniques

  • Trauma-informed care

  • Postpartum support

  • Scope of practice in Canada

​

 

Renewal Requirements:​

  • Submit documentation of 5 additional births

  • Attend 1 continuing education workshop

  • Write or record a 500-word/video reflection on how your doula practice has evolved
