Which Baby Essential Should I Invest: A Commemorative Photo Shoot, A Top of the Line Stroller, A New Snoo, or a BabyMoon Trip?

Becoming a parent is an exciting and overwhelming experience. From the moment you find out you're expecting a baby, your mind is flooded with a million thoughts and decisions to make. One of the biggest decisions is how to prepare for your little one's arrival. And let's be real, there are a lot of things to buy – strollers, car seats, cribs, and the list goes on. But what happens when you don't have the budget for everything on your dream list, what gets sacrificed?

As a new parent, you want the best for your child, and it's natural to want to splurge on top-of-the-line strollers, snoos and car seats, pregnancy and newborn photography sessions to commemorate this special time, and designer cribs and fancy nurseries. However, these items come with a hefty price tag, and it's not always possible to afford them all. This is where prioritizing and budgeting become crucial

First and foremost, it's essential to understand that having the most expensive stroller or car seat does not guarantee your child's safety or comfort. Yes, these high-end products may have advanced features and stylish designs, but there are also many affordable options that meet safety standards and provide comfort for your little one. Do your research and read reviews before making a purchase. Consider your lifestyle and needs, and choose a stroller and car seat that fit your budget and requirements.

Pregnancy and newborn photography is another expense that many parents want to splurge on. While it's lovely to have professional photos of your growing belly and your newborn, it's not a necessity. With the rise of smartphone cameras and editing apps, you can capture beautiful moments yourself or enlist a friend or family member to take photos for you. If you do want to hire a professional photographer, consider a mini session or a package deal that includes both maternity and newborn photos to save some money.

Designer cribs are undoubtedly beautiful and can add a touch of luxury to your nursery. Snoos seem like wise investments, particularly with a first child, and do have a resale value. However, your baby will outgrow this item quickly, and it may not be worth the high price tag. Instead, consider purchasing a quality, but more affordable, crib and invest in a comfortable and safe mattress for your little one. As for the snoo, there are other options for soothing your baby, such as a swing or a bassinet. Babymoons are essential and from a global perspective, part of routine care but we can be creatively budget-conscious while being well looked after.

Now, let's talk about doulas. Understand this. I am a doula with decades of experience working in reproductive health. I have had six of my own babies both with and without doulas. I do have a bias but I also have personal and professional experience. A birth or postpartum doula can provide invaluable support during your pregnancy, labour, and postpartum period. They offer emotional, physical, and informational support to help you have a positive birth experience and adjust to life with a newborn. There is no price tag on emotional and physical well being. Doulas care is tailored to your own growing family and your own unique needs. From helping with recovery from a physically demanding labour, an overwhelming or traumatic birth, a or navigating baby feeding challenges, your doula is there to help you through these crazy times. When looking at your budget, when creating lists for baby showers, a doula should be at the very top of the list, particularly if you are birthing in Ontario.

Remember, your baby's birth and postpartum experience are not solely determined by the material possessions you have. While it's nice to have certain items, they are not essential for your child's well-being or your experience as a new parent. Prioritize your needs and budget accordingly. Your baby will be happy and loved, no matter the brand of their stroller or the style of their crib. However, your birth and postpartum experience contributes to your bonding with your new baby. How you feel, matters.

In conclusion, while top-of-the-line strollers, car seats, pregnancy and newborn photography, and designer cribs and snoos may be desirable, they are not necessities. As a new parent, it's essential to prioritize yourself, your partner, and your well-being first and foremost. Every parent wants to be their own best self following the birth of their child. It is imperative to focus on what truly matters – the love and care you provide for your baby. How you achieve this is up to you.
