In Ontario, midwifery has been a regulated health profession since 1994. Midwives are primary care providers and can work in a variety of settings and have proven an excellent track record for low risk, low intervention births in the two decades of statistics we have.
MYTH: Having a midwife attended birth means having your baby at home.
TRUTH: Midwives can, and do, attend homebirths. Midwives also work in birth centres and hospitals.
MYTH: Midwifery care is expensive.
TRUTH: In Ontario, midwifery is covered by OHIP.
MYTH: I would like to have both a midwife and a doctor at my birth.
TRUTH: That's like having two dentists doing your routine dental work.
